The Ascendant

At the eastern point of the horoscope sits the Ascendant, or rising sign. It represents the personality that we project to the world, our persona. People usually come across as their ascendant or ‘rising sign’ when we first meet them, and these traits can either work in harmony or in tension with the sun sign (which rules the inner self). Some people hide behind their ascendant, turning it into a sort of mask, while others embrace and integrate the characteristics.

Along with the persona, the ascendant rules the physical body, so someone with Cancer rising may be have a rounded face and a sensitive, nurturing nature, while a Gemini ascendant might bring an angular appearance and a chatty, jittery edge (nail-biting can be a dead giveaway).

Of course, if you have a planet sitting near the ascendant or situated in the first house, this will add complexity to the picture, but the interpretations below should form a good starting point.

I’ve used Meryl Streep’s chart to show where the ascendant or rising sign is … see the red circle on the left? That’s it. Her ascendant is ruled by Leo, while her sun is in Cancer. Hence, her love for drama and taking risks.

ARIES

People with Aries ascendants tend to move quickly, talk quickly, and act without hesitation; in fact their boundless energy and enthusiasm are often legendary. Due to their confidence, they often come across as natural leaders and entrepreneurs, although their impulsive, excitable nature can lead to mishaps, especially when angry.
Traits: active or sporty, magnetic, extroverted, competitive, confident, headstrong, enterprising, often ruddy complexion

TAURUS

People with Taurus ascendants tend to take a more considered, slow and steady approach, but once their mind is made up, there’s no stopping them. Their senses are generally highly attuned, giving a love for good food, soft fabrics, music and finer things in life; comfort, quality and luxury often rank high on their list of priorities.
Traits: stable, dependable, refined, musical or artistic, stubborn, determined, acquisitive, often strong, sturdy or thick-set

GEMINI

People with Gemini on the ascendant tend to be energetic, agile and always on the go; they generally love a chat, and due to their natural curiosity, are often drawn towards books, films and media-related fields. Nervous habits are common in this sign, but plenty of exercise and physical activity can help to calm them down.
Traits: versatile, well-read, expressive, edgy, curious, active, impulsive, talkative, restless, often slim, tall or boney

CANCER

People with Cancer on their ascendant tend to be sensitive, caring souls; their home is their sanctuary, and like a crab, they retreat into their shell when threatened. Parenthood and teaching professions often appeal, along with food, health and finance-related fields, for comfort and material security are important to this sign.
Traits: sensitive, sympathetic, feeling, moody, intuitive, defensive, home loving, often pale, plump or round in the face.

LEO

People with Leo on their ascendant need to be noticed. The bigger and more glamourous, the better, especially when it comes to cars, clothes and their hair (or mane). Their confident, extroverted approach makes them natural performers, managers, motivators and salespeople, but beneath the exterior, the ego can be surprisingly fragile.
Traits: friendly, confident, loyal, glamourous, creative, dramatic, bossy, opinionated, restless, often bald or have ‘big hair’

VIRGO

People with Virgo on their ascendant tend to be intelligent, exacting, competent and discriminating. Their attention to detail is often impressive, but over-thinking things can lead to worry and negative thinking, or even OCD. A preference for stylish items and quality clothing often surfaces early, along with a love for facts and figures.
Traits: practical, methodical, hard-working, reliable, exacting, health-conscious, anxious, face often develops fine worry lines

LIBRA

People with Libra on their ascendant tend to be talkative, charming and charismatic. Their aesthetic eye is usually well developed, leading to a love for fashion, design and the performing arts. Relationships are often a preoccupation, along with issues involving justice and fair play. Their refined, stylish manner can be a dead giveaway.
Traits: diplomatic, stylish, romantic, cultured, chatty, indecisive, often well-dressed, with wide-set eyes or attractive features

SCORPIO

People with Scorpio on their ascendant tend to be private or secretive, especially when they feel emotionally exposed. Power and control are strong life themes, but when harnessed correctly, these traits can bring great influence and success. An air of mystery and charisma often acts as a magnet to the opposite sex.
Traits: passionate, driven, intense, secretive, sexual, powerful, competitive, often drawn to mysterious people, situations and places

SAGITTARIUS

People with Sagittarius on their ascendant often crave freedom and fresh air. Travel can be a major theme or they may be drawn to foreign philosophies, people and places; their search for answers often lasts a lifetime. Known for their sense of humour and outgoing nature, they are often quite private, or even aloof.
Traits: friendly, talented, generous, unpredictable, outdoorsy, adventurous, restless, often drawn to travel and the outdoors

CAPRICORN

People with Capricorn on their ascendant tend to feel old before their time; even as children they may feel more responsible and serious than others, but as they age they become more carefree. Still, they place high value on hard work, rules and respect; their sensible, grounded nature often makes them pillars of society.
Traits: practical, conservative, careful, industrious, wise, judgmental, reliable, organised, often tall or wiry with a lined face

AQUARIUS

People with Aquarius on their ascendant value originality, freedom and independence; they’re the scientists, innovators and eccentrics of the zodiac, but a surprisingly stubborn, sceptical streak can run deep. Often opinionated and always up for a chat, people with this rising sign follow the beat of their own drum.
Traits: friendly, inventive, unique, eccentric, freedom-loving, determined, stubborn, often drawn to colourful people and clothes

PISCES

People with Pisces on their ascendant tend to feel emotions deeply and resonate with other-worldly spheres. Mysticism, healing and the arts may attract them from an early age, but when ungrounded, escapist tendencies can surface in negative ways. Being creative souls, finding healthy, expressive outlets is essential.
Traits: sensitive, creative, caring, moody, imaginative, mystical, escapist, compassionate, often pale skin and cold extremities

The Saturn-Neptune dilemma

As Saturn and Neptune form an exact square overhead (a stressful 90 degree aspect), many of us will begin to question life’s bigger issues … especially around areas involving freedom, control, creativity, spirituality, security and responsibility.

Saturn pushes us towards structure, routine, responsibility and so called ‘sensible thinking’, while Neptune rules more idealistic, ethereal worlds, along with confusion, deception and escapism (yes, watch those wines). As you can see, it’s not the most natural pairing. One planet deals with cold hard facts, the other with the alluring realm of dreams and illusion.

But Neptune is urging us to loosen our grip and see what happens, especially if our lives have become too structured and serious. It doesn’t deal with black and white, good and bad. Instead, it encourages us to dig deeper, to experience life more fully and reach out with love and compassion. It reminds us that we are connected to everything and everyone, whether we like it or not.

Depending on where they fall in your horoscope the effects may be subtle or intense … ranging from a shift in perception to an entire new philosophy on life, although with a full moon heightening the energy, the effects are likely to be strong.

If you’re unsure what to do, a great place to start would be with a dream diary or a few yoga or meditation classes. Take your time and let things percolate. Your subconscious will be unusually accessible over this period, so try to tune in.

* The Saturn-Neptune square first aligns on 26 November 2015, then again in mid-June and early September, 2016. It’s part of a larger 36-year cycle that began in 1989 and ends in 2026.

The times are a’changing

virgo jenny bume astrology sydney.

Jupiter, the planet of expansion and learning, is gearing up for a major transition when he officially enters the sign of Virgo (on August 11). Over the past year, Jupiter’s transit through the sign of Leo created opportunities for love, creativity and children – along with plenty of Leonine glitz and glamour – but now the solar system’s giant will take on a more frugal, considered tone.

At it’s core Virgo wants to help, wants to do meaningful work, and wants to make the world a better place.

This down-to-earth placement will turn our collective attention towards areas involving healthcare, education, food, service to others and sustainable living. Concerns about chemicals, farming practices and global warming are likely to take centre stage, which in turn could dramatically speed up government reforms and clean energy development (yippee).

Virgo has a strong back-to-basics vibe as well, which could see more people growing their own veggies or dusting off their old sewing machines, craft gear or woodworking tools; after all, it’s the sign of precision, patience and craftsmanship.

As expansive Jupiter moves through Virgo, the sign of service and charity, more people may also decide to donate money or volunteer their time; at the very least, charitable causes and food-related issues will hit the spotlight. Natural and alternative therapies should also benefit from this year-long transit, along with co-ops, health food stores and farmer’s markets.

It’s back to the future … who knows, macramé, crochet and tie-dying might even come back!

Time to slow down and ressess

Happy New Moon! Falling in the sign of Taurus, the May 18 new moon highlights issues around food, comfort, love and money. Interestingly, Mercury is at a standstill today as he prepares to go retrograde for the next three weeks, but don’t panic: it’s a great time to revisit old ideas or delve deeper into your needs and desires. Something that passed you by might even come back into your life, a sort of second chance. The key to success over the coming month is slow down, revise and research … don’t push things through before they’re fully cooked.

On a cautionary note, Mercury retrogrades often disrupt movement and communication, so allow more time for traveling over this period, avoid buying electronics or installing software and be sure to double-check important documents (hidden details may come to light in the following weeks).

Sabian Symbols, where every degree of the zodiac (all 360 of them) is connected to an image, often contain interesting insights. Following is an excerpt from Lynda Hill’s book: The new Moon is occurring at 27 degrees of Taurus: AN OLD INDIAN WOMAN SELLING BEADS AND TRINKETS  ‘An Old Indian Woman’ is ‘Selling Beads and Trinkets’. She probably spends a great deal of her time selling these small products of her culture for very little reward. The modern world often shows little regard and doesn’t respect the crafts and skills that are well respected within her tribe. Meaning: Do not underestimate yourself or restrict yourself to what you think others believe you are capable of. Everybody has talents and abilities, including you.

What does 2015 have in store?

jenny blume astrology and feng shui - sydney

If you’ve been searching for equilibrium, it’s good news. Okay, things might get off to a slow start (let’s say relaxed!), but the Easter Supermoon should usher in a more productive, optimistic era. As the turbulent celestial energy begins to stabilise and subside, it should be easier to get a firm footing and reach our goals.

On a larger scale, Saturn’s shift into big-picture Sagittarius will propel environmental and global issues into the spotlight for the next two years (and see your feet grow itchy!), then from winter, Jupiter’s move into earthy Virgo territory could fuel a growing interest in whole foods, natural therapies, old-style crafts and wellbeing. I don’t know about you, but getting back to the basics sounds good to me!

Starsign gems and birthstones

ARIES

March 21 – April 20
For you, Aries, “Diamonds are a girl’s best friend”. These glittering gems are said to attract love and money, though there’s a catch: their powers are strongest when received as a gift. Rubies can lift your energy and libido, but if you’re revved up enough, watch out. Traditional April birthstone: Diamond

TAURUS

April 21 – May 21
Emeralds, known as “the stone of successful love”, are believed to strengthen the memory and promote a happy family life – it’s no wonder they’re your special stone. Topaz also resonates nicely with your sign, bringing purpose and helpful people into the picture. Traditional May birthstone: Emerald

GEMINI

May 22 – June 21
For jittery Geminis, Agate and Tourmaline are both a perfect match. Roman soldiers once carried these gems as lucky talismans, but today, Tourmalines are known as “healing stones”. To sooth frayed nerves or calm a racing mind, keep one close at hand. Traditional June birthstone: Pearl

CANCER

June 22 – July 23
Pearls embody the female spirit: soft and luminescent but strong and resilient – just like you, Cancer. Being lunar ruled creatures, Moonstones also resonate on a deep level. To balance your hormones and even out emotions, wear a silver Moonstone ring. Traditional July birthstone: Ruby

LEO

July 23 – Aug 23
For sun-worshiping Lions golden Citrines are said to attract good fortune, while Tiger’s Eye crystals bring courage, confidence and clarity of vision. Being the zodiac’s royalty, Rubies also resonate with your sign, especially when set in gold.
Traditional August birthstone: Peridot

VIRGO

Aug 24 – Sept 23
Once worn as amulets by warriors, Sardonyx are said to boost stamina and bring happiness; some even say they aid childbirth. Being a natural healer, Peridot also suits your sign; for a sense of peace and well-being, wear a necklace or pendant. Traditional September birthstone: Sapphire

LIBRA

Sept 24 – Oct 23
Being ruled by the scales, it’s no surprise that your stones promote balance and harmony. Opal, the “stone of hope and justice” is your official gem, but for a calming influence try Sapphires and Aquamarines. They should attract good fortune too! Traditional October birthstone: Opal

SCORPIO

Oct 22 – Nov 22
For Scorpions, golden Topaz really is “your little ray of sunshine”. Worn as a ring, this healing crystal should bring joy and good health into your life. To release negative patterns, try wearing a Malachite ring, know by many as the “stone of transformation”. Traditional November birthstone: Citrine

SAGITTARIUS

Nov 23 – Dec 22
Looking for equilibrium? Search out a Turquoise. Prized by Aztecs and ancient Egyptians, these stones are believed to energise the spirit and promote harmony in love. To recharge your batteries or raise spiritual awareness, wear a Topaz on your ring finger.
Traditional December birthstone: Blue topaz

CAPRICORN

Dec 23 – Jan 20
Garnets, known as balancing stones, are your perfect fit, Capricorn; not only do they inspire love and serenity, they are said to lift depression and ease arthritis. Jet and Onyx also hold an affinity to your sign, helping to clear the mind and lift the spirits. Traditional January birthstone: Garnet

AQUARIUS

Jan 21 – Feb 19
Aquamarines, known in ancient times as “the life force stone”, are believed reduce stress and calm fears. Amethysts also have a calming effect, and importantly, can open your mind to new ideas. For best results, wear as bracelets or necklaces. Traditional February birthstone: Amethyst

PISCES

Feb 22 – Mar 20
Once used as charms against disease, Amethysts exert an almost magical pull. When focused upon, spiritual awareness can be enhanced and negative energy cleared. Moonstones also resonate with Pisceans, helping to relax the mind and calm emotions. Traditional March birthstone: Aquamarine

Mercury retrogrades

meditating at sunriseMercury, the planet of communication and travel, is coming to a standstill today (February 7), at least from our perspective, as he shifts into a month-long retrograde phase. It’s well known, at least amongst astrologers, that Mercury retrogrades can feel like an exercise in frustration (and patience!), but insights gained over these slower, more reflective periods can be invaluable, even if we can’t see it at the time.

Delays and hiccups often prove to be fortuitous as they give us an opportunity to reassess and improve our plans. Pivotal people from our past often pop back onto the scene under Mercury retrogrades or forgotten dreams bubble up to the surface. If we’ve taken a wrong turn, retrograde periods can help to get us back on track.

Adding an interesting edge to this particular retrograde (they occur roughly three times a year) is Mercury’s mystical rendezvous with dreamy Neptune. Occurring in the sign of Pisces, this super-sensitized aspect is perfect for strengthening our connection to the spiritual world; think meditation, dream interpretation, artistic or musical expression, spiritual healing work, psychic development or communion with nature. Slow down, soak it all up and enjoy!

It’s eclipse season!

total eclipse - astrologyNew moons often bring fresh starts, but eclipses* can bring revolutions.

Okay, eclipses don’t have a great reputation, but they can spur us into making sweeping (and often, long overdue) changes in our lives. If you’ve been resisting the tide or hanging onto something that’s holding you back, try to let go – or the cosmos might do it for you. Scorpio moons deal symbolically with death and rebirth, so making fresh starts will rarely be easier. Whether it’s your fitness, finances or love life that needs attention, try to take some proactive steps, even if they’re only small. Fitness programs begun under this strong, steadfast sign tend to build muscle fast.
On the investment front, keep digging around and researching your options, then make a move after November 10, when Mercury shifts back into forward gear. With the eclipse reverberating for the whole of November, insights gained over this period might prove to be profound; they might even set you on a whole new path. This sign also rules mysteries and the underworld, so don’t be surprised if you uncover some big secrets as well.

*The eclipse will occur on Sunday evening, AEST. Total solar eclipses, like this one, occur when the moon passes exactly in front of the sun, so they always coincide with the new moon. Unfortunately, this one won’t be visible from Asia or Australia. We have to wait until next April for that!

Perfect pairings

TAURUS: Virgos, Capricorns and Taurians may share your values and need for security, but Pisceans and Cancerians could inspire great things.

GEMINI: Aquarians, Geminis and Librans should click instantly, along with fun-loving Aries and Leos. Opinions might fly, but you’ll rarely be bored.

CANCER: Pisceans and Scorpios are your traditional love matches, but earthy Taurians, Capricorns and Virgos can bring a lovely sense of stability.

VIRGO: Taurians, Virgos and Capricorns may be your rock, but If you’re after more passion and excitement, search out a heart-ruled cancerian or Scorpion.

LIBRA: Geminis and Aquarians are traditional love matches, but if you want more heat, fire signs like Aries, Leos and Sags should get things sizzling.

SCORPIO: Passionate Cancerians, Scorpions and Pisceans should hit the emotional spot, along with salt of the earth Virgos and Capricorns.

SAGITTARIUS: Leos, Aries and fellow Sags should send romantic sparks flying, but if you’re searching for a more cerebral relationship, try a Libran or Aquarian.

CAPRICORN: Virgos, Taurians and Capricorns may feel comfy (like an old pair of slippers!), but if you’re after fireworks, find a heart-ruled Scorpio or Pisces.

AQUARIUS: Geminis, Librans and fellow Aquarians often resonate instantly, but if you’re after more passion and pizazz, let a Leo, Sag or Aries light your fire.

PISCES: Scorpions, Cancerians and fellow Fish may feel like kindred spirits but in the celestial compatibly stakes, Capricorns and Taurians aren’t too far behind!
