As most of us spend a third of our lives in the bedroom, it’s worth getting it right. Why not start with these feng shui basics?
Ideally, your bed should be positioned diagonally from the door, against a solid wall. Placing beds directly under windows is not generally recommended, but if it’s unavoidable, be sure to draw the curtains or blind at night. Facing ensuite doors should also be avoided, as the watery energy may adversely affect your health.
Try not to position your bed directly under a beam; when running across your body they can affect your health (for example, across the stomach may bring digestive problems), while lengthways can cause rifts in relationships.
Feng shui looks at the total environment, so electromagnetic fields should be assessed (if possible, with a Gauss meter). Spending time in high fields can disturb sleep and play havoc with your health, so move chargers and modems, and check that you’re not sleeping near a meter box.
Feng shui for romance
Colour can affect us in powerful ways, especially on a primal level. Transform your bedroom from bland to boudoir with a good splash of red, and while you’re at it, ditch the white sheets. Shades of red, ranging from deep pink to burgundy, represent passion and arousal, while white symbolises purity and innocence. Enough said.
Smells can awaken our deeper senses in an instant, so pop an oil burner near your bed, make up a massage oil or try a few drops to the bath. Ylang ylang’s exotic qualities work as an aphrodisiac for many people, while oils like Cedarwood, Jasmine, Neroli, Patchouli, Pine, Rose and Sandalwood can also increase desire.
Activate your love sector, located in the south west part of your bedroom, with crystals, candles, romantic images or flowers (fresh or silk). When possible, place objects in pairs and display images that conjure feelings of romance. Save photos of your little darlings for the living room and make your bedroom an ‘adults only’ space.
